The Momella route approaches Mount Meru from the eastern face, moving up through the northern ridge to the peak. The total trek distance of mountain Meru is 45 km/27 miles.

5-Day Hiking & Overnight Stays

With only one official route to climb Mt. Meru, we offer 3-to-54day hikes to the summit of the little brother to Mt. Kilimanjaro. Unlike the Kilimanjaro, where tented camping options are available on all routes, the Mt. Meru route only has huts for overnight stays.

Overview

Throughout the climb, you'll be accompanied by experienced guides and porters, who will assist with carrying gear and ensuring safety. Mount Meru offers stunning views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape, making it a rewarding adventure for trekkers.

Many hikers prefer to do this climb before Kilimanjaro to help with acclimatation.

Day 1
Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
The trek begins with a drive to Momella Gate, the starting point. From there, you'll hike through montane forest to Miriakamba Hut (at around 2,500 meters/8,202 feet), where you'll spend the night.
Day 2
Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
The trail continues through the forest, gradually ascending to Saddle Hut (at around 3,570 meters/11,713 feet). This day's hike offers views of wildlife and vegetation changes as you enter the heath and moorland zones.
Day 3
Saddle Hut to Summit Mt. Meru to Saddle Hut
This is the summit day. You'll start early in the morning to reach the summit of Socialist Peak (4,562 meters/14,968 feet). After enjoying the panoramic views, you'll descend back to Saddle Hut for the night.
Day 4
Saddle Hut to Momella Gate
Descend further down to Miriakamba Hut, retracing your steps through the montane forest. This is a shorter hiking day, allowing for some rest and recovery.

The final day involves descending back to Momella Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificates and celebrate your accomplishment before transferring back to Arusha or Moshi.
